New Year Resolutions ! Do they Really Work?

If you read the last post, you might have made some resolutions yet. Did they come true? Oh, I guess it’s too early to ask all that.

Or is it? Well, whether you did pay heed to the previous post or not, one thing’s for sure, you can cast a shadow on everybody with your fuzzy vows, but certainly not on yourself.

The story is almost the same every year when you read such inspirational stuff to do that makes you feel everything’s going to be all right.. Or the crystal ball that tells you what’s right and wrong this year. While it’s not a great idea to fall for such false pretentions, we are dumb for even thinking about them.

What you should be doing is planning at a particular time of the year. It could be anytime, doing it once in a year would be a good idea. However, if you did all that in the beginning of the year and still there’s no repsite, there could probably be two main reasons:

Non seriousness or lack of motivation – Almost 80% of the resolutions don’t last after the first month, January; gone a few quarters, and these are soon abandoned. This happens mainly due to lack of motivation or commitment.

The problem could occur when you resolve to accomplish some unrealistic things or those that you would never do. These lack foundation and meaning. However, there’s always a ray of light and the sense of motivation that you feel initially, but that’s like a flash in the pan. It doesn’t last long. Motivation is needed everyday, it’s like taking bath.

What you must do is go for more centralized goals or resolutions that mean something to you, something you wanted to do or achieve for ages. That’s perhaps the only way to approach your resolutions, and have the confidence to complete and keep the motivation alive.

Timing is not right – You just came back to work from holidays, only to face the business music again. It definitely isn’t an inspiring picture to come back to the usual. Wrong timing, isn’t it? Why resolve only at the beginning of the year when there’s more than 300 good days to make decisions? Everyday is a good day to start up all new. You shouldn’t really wait for the first month of the year to start afresh. Do it when motivation is around.

However, we as human beings, still follow this yearly ritual to make resolutions and sustain them as long as we can. Perhaps, that is why New Year resolutions articles are among the most read ones during the holiday season…

Today, if you feel that it’s the right time to start the process of bringing about a change, don’t look back. Go for it !
